Our Dendrocalamus Minor Bamboo story…

One lone plant of Dendrocalamus Minor flowered and seeded in the first 3 months of 2005 at Bamboo Whitsunday.

We harvested 13500 seeds by hanging shade cloth around the flowering bamboo to catch the seeds. We collected the Dendrocalamus Minor seeds most days and potted them up as very fresh seeds once a week for four months.

We had a germination success rate of 96%.

The variation in the form and size, colour, vigour and foliage and how erect they stood in there pots in the first few months was great.

We picked out more than 1000 advanced seedlings mostly erect variegated runts. Hoping  there would be some winners for use as a small hedging and screening bamboos.

More than 120 cultivars where planted out before they where 15 months old. The 120 cultivars that are now 8 years old are showing their true form.

In February 2013, twenty cultivars now show lots of promise to be suitable small to medium sized bamboos for hedging and privacy screening and ornamental use.

These new Australian cultivars of Dendrocalamus Minor have been planted out into many different environments to find out there true form and tolerance to min temp min humidity height on average and culm dia and colour and which soil types they like.

They are being trailed in southern environments that have min temps below zero with low humidity. The mother plant of these new cultivars has a tolerance to -4c which should stick with all of the new cultivars.

The first few of these new cultivars will be for sale in December 2019. We will be taking orders in September.
